Wherever You Go There You Are
An Incredibly Impactful Novel by Jon Kabat-Zinn
“Perhaps the most ‘spiritual’ thing any of us can do is simply to look through our own eyes, see with eyes of wholeness, & act with integrity & kindness.”
Wherever You Go, There You Are by Jon Kabat-Zinn was revolutionary, to say the least. He was one of the first people to look at mindfulness, say “dang, there’s something there that can be really helpful to a lot of people without attaching it to war-causing, division-driving debatability of religion,” and then write a book about it. (That’s definitely a direct quote.)
What we (the semi-experts) have to say about it.
There really isn’t a bad thing we could say about this book. It’s known for being the must-have into to mindfulness book for beginners and it definitely lives up to the hype. It’s written simply and doesn’t use any Buddhist jargon without first explaining it.
Kabat-Zinn (who, adorably, hyphenated his and his wife’s last name after getting married) makes sure that he gives you not only the overarching ideas behind everyday mindfulness but actual applicable and practical tools that will help you implement it with ease.
Bonus: the 10th edition is bound with a deckle edge, which makes the pages a little uneven. It creates this very satisfying, 100-year-old book feel without having to spend the money on a 1st edition.
What the real experts say about it.
“Want to meet the most interesting, exciting person you will ever know? Let Jon Kabat-Zinn introduce you to YOU. Nowhere else in the literature of meditation can you find so simple and commonsensical a path to yourself.”
– Norman Lear
“Ideally, meditation is not something we do, but something we live. Jon Kabat-Zinn points the way to this living spirit with clarity, ease, and poetry.”
– Sharon Salzberg
